BWPS Field Trip - Winter in New Hampshire
On Saturday January 10, 2009 BWPS held a field trip to the Franconia Notch area of New Hampshire to photograph winter waterfalls in Franconia Notch State Park at the Basin an the Flume. The group also visited the nearby town of Sugar Hill to photograph the late afternoon light on the White Mountains.
BWPS Members taking advantage of this field trip included Elyssa Conley, Deb Guyer Mike Goodman, Joel Shore, Brian Riccio, Steve Schwartz, Tom Manders, Megan Foucher and Ed McGuirk.
When the group arrived at the Basin at 8:30am, it was a balmy 5 degrees. But what’s a little cold to this intrepid band of photographers? The group enjoyed shooting ice formations and waterfalls at the Basin, we took a hike to the Old Pine Covered bridge in the Flume, and then we visited the Sugar Hill NH area to photograph St. Matthews church (of lupine fame), and the gorgeous views of the White Mountains. The group tried it’s hand at creating some HDR images, and attached is an example from Mike Goodman of and image with and without HDR. HDR stands for High Dynamic Range and it is a post processing technique that involves recovering highlight and shadow detail in the same image through the use of software, sort of like Photoshops Shadows/Highlights tool, but done in a more sophisticated way.
While the weather wasn’t fully cooperative, our group managed to come away with some interesting images, a lot of good conversation about photography, and a little exercise hiking through the snow. And even better, nobody lost any fingers or toes to Frost Bite !!! Can’t say the same for our batteries though…
