DESCRIPTION OF CATEGORIES FOR SPECIAL COMPETITION
Unlike our regular competition, the special competition has categories (as listed above). BWPS allows a broad interpretation of the categories and you are able to enter any subject matter into the competition.
To help you decide what kind of image to submit, here are some definitions of categories by photographic organizations. Entries that clearly fit the category will score better than those that require more imagination to see how they fit. Please keep in mind that the purpose of this competition is to HAVE FUN!
Definition of CREATIVE by Naples, FL Camera Club: This category is meant to be a “creative category” where the entries are photos that are recognizably altered. The image must obviously display a change in natural color, form, shape or any combination of three. High Dynamic Range (HDR) images without further changes are not considered creative-altered. The original image must be made by the entrant. All images must be original and may not incorporate elements produced by anyone else. Original images must be altered by the maker; artwork or computer graphics generated by the entrant may be incorporated if the original photographic content predominates. Images may not be constructed entirely within a computer. It is necessary that the image's core content be identifiable [as photographic]. Any subject matter is acceptable as long as the Creative-Altered guidelines are apparent.
PSA Definition of CREATIVE: Creative is defined as “altered reality." Creative, experimental, imaginative, and/or a departure from realistic representation.
BWPS Definition of CREATIVE: For BWPS, a creative image is typically produced by using various post-production techniques done in the digital darkroom. However, the creativity can also be done wholly in camera through use of design, lighting, perspective, subject matter, etc.
LANDSCAPE / TRAVEL CATEGORY
Royal Photographic Society Description of LANDSCAPE: Different people will define landscape photography in different ways: [from] wilderness areas to cultivated farmland, [from] high mountains to flat plains, [from] lush forests to arid deserts and sand dunes, [from] coastal areas to industrial locations, [from] wide panoramas to intimate details, [from] far away beauty spots to local parklands, [from] the spectacular to the familiar. These are all subjects of landscape photography and there is no single definition. The important thing is that it offers the photographer, the opportunity to capture our own personal response to a very wide range of environments. Most of us have some form of landscape relatively close to where we live. We might not be lucky enough to live in an area of outstanding natural beauty, but most of us will have a park, an area of common land, or a canal close by and this is all that we need to work with. The most successful landscape images are usually those that incorporate more than merely a record of a place or scene. They also capture a sense of what it actually felt like to be there at the time, emphasising the atmosphere of the place and the mood of the moment. The wonderful variables of light, weather, time of day and time of year are constantly influencing how a place looks and feels. These conditions are forever changing, not just from season to season or day to day, but often minute by minute, and can turn the most ordinary of places into the most extraordinary. The natural world is a very transient place and photography helps us to become increasingly more sensitive to these on-going changes.
PSA Definition of TRAVEL: A Photo Travel image must express the feeling of a time and place, and portray a land, its people, or a culture in its natural state. Photo Travel images have no geographical limitations. Ultra close-ups, which lose their identity and studio-type model shots, are unacceptable. Techniques that add to, relocate, replace or remove any element of the original image, except by cropping, are not permitted. Techniques that enhance the presentation of the image without changing the photo travel content are permitted. All adjustments must appear natural.
Naples [FL] Definition of TRAVEL: A photo travel image must represent the feeling of a time and a place, portray a land, its people or a culture in its natural state, and has no geographic limitations. Ultra close-ups which lose their identity, studio-type model shots, or photographic manipulations which misrepresent the true situation or alter the content of the image are unacceptable in photo travel competition.
BLACK & WHITE CATEGORY - DIGITAL
BWPS Description of Black & White DIGITAL: Image must be monochrome, that is consisting of various shades from dark to light of one color. That color can be black/white, or sepia, or blue, or any other single color. The reason for this description is that the digital images will be projected by a color projector, which may introduce slight color casts. [NOTE: The definition for black & white digital and color are slightly different.]
BLACK & WHITE CATEGORY - PRINT
BWPS Description of Black & White PRINT: Image must be greyscale, which is composed exclusively of shades of gray, varying from black at the weakest intensity to white at the strongest. (Remember 256 Shades of Grey!) Sepia-toned or otherwise colored images are not allowed. Most of the reason for this description is that Digital Silver Imaging is offering a special discount to print competition images for members and these images will be strictly greyscale.
